Answer The rate of permeate transported per unit of membrane area, usually measured in gallons per square foot per day (gfd), or liters per square meter and hour (L/m2h)
Question MWCO:molecular weight cutoff?
Answer Molecular weight cut-off or MWCO refers to the lowest molecular weight solute (in daltons) in which 90% of the solute is retained by the membrane, or the molecular weight of the molecule (e.g. globular protein) that is 90% retained by the membrane.
Question What's the dead-end (Full) filtration?
Answer Dead-end Filtration
When using a dead-end filtration technique, all the fluid passes through the membrane and all particles larger than the pore sizes of the membrane are stopped at its surface. Particle size prevents contaminants from entering and passing through the membrane. This means that the trapped particles start to build up a "filter cake" on the surface of the membrane which reduces the efficiency of the filtration process until the filter cake is washed away in back flushing.
Question What's the cross flow filtration?
Answer Cross flow Filtration
In cross flow filtration, the fluid feed stream runs tangential to the membrane, establishing a pressure differential across the membrane. This causes some of the particles to pass through the membrane. Remaining particles continue to flow across the membrane, "cleaning it". In contrast to the dead-end filtration technique, the use of a tangential flow will prevent thicker particles from building up a "filter cake".
Question What's the reason of high UF/MF membrane modules trans-membrane pressure difference?

  1. 1. Membrane modules are polluted, solutions is to find out pollution reason, adopting related flushing method;
  2. 2. Permeate water flow is too high, solution is to adjust flow according to the requirements in SMT Operation Guideline;
  3. 3. Inlet water temperature is too low, solution is to increase inlet water temperature (Equip Plate-type Heat Exchanger)
Question What's the reason lower trans-membrane flux of UF/MF membrane modules?
Answer
  1. 1. Membrane modules are polluted, solutions is to find out pollution reason, adopting related flushing method;
  2. 2. Flow meter fault, solution is to check flow meter, ensuring it works correctly;
  3. 3. Raw water pressure is too low, solution is to increase feed water pressure;
  4. 4. Inlet water temperature is too low, solution is to increase inlet water temperature (Equip Plate-type Heat Exchanger)
  5. 5. Valves setting problem, solution is to recheck and ensure all opening valve shall be open.
Question The permeate water turbidity of UF/MF membrane modules become higher and the solutions:

  1. 1. Inlet water quality beyond the required range, solution is to check inlet water quality, such as COD, Turbidity;
  2. 2. Membrane modules broken, solution is to find and repaire broken membrane fiber;
  3. 3. Leakage of casting form sealing surface, solution is to find and repair leakage point.
